As a non-profit research organization, the Institute of Integrated Agriculture Development (IIAD) is dedicated to advancing the development of modern mountain agriculture characterized by the distinctive and unique features of Guizhou. It strengthens its efforts to overcome a broad range of challenges impacting the development of integrated agriculture technology, rural economy and social development. The institute has scientific talent in agricultural science and technology. Of 35 employees, 11of them entitled as senior researchers, 22 of them hold doctoral or master degree, and 4 of them obtained consulting engineer certificates. Its facilities include a 1650 m2 laboratory, and over 500 Mu experimental stations of insect pollination for blueberry and pitaya.

The institute, originally known as Novel Technology Research Group in 1960, served as Laboratory of Agricultural Physics (1960-1984), Institute of Agricultural Application of Atomic Energy (1984-1991), Integrated Research Institute (1991-2004), and IIAD/ Institute of Guizhou Agricultural Products Processing/Institute of Guizhou Rural Economy and Social Development (2005-present). Unremitting endeavors by generations have made IIAD an outstanding research organization which has generated myriad scientific and technological advances, with 26 of them winning national or provincial awards. Since 2005, the institute has conducted 120 research projects funded by the ministries in the central government, municipal government and international organizations, published 11 books and 130 articles, and compiled numerous consulting reports exampled by " The 12th Five-year Plan of Guizhou: Regional Development Planning and Poverty alleviation for Wumengshan " and "Feasibility Study Report of World Bank Grants China Loan for Guizhou Rural Development Project".

Since the 12thfive-year plan, research and policy work at the institute has covered a broad range of topics that have been categorized as three disciplinary clusters, 12 focused fields, and 20 research focuses. Three research teams have been initiated based on the clusters, namely agricultural application of nuclear technology (agricultural products processing), rural resource and environment (conservation and utilization of bees), as well as agricultural policy. The institute aligns its research priorities with above clusters: 1) integrated application of eco-circular agricultural technologies, eastern honeybee conservation and ecological restoration of karst rocky desertification, honeybee pollination studies, etc; 2) agricultural products storage and processing, insects and bacteria control of Chinese traditional medicine, and radiation breeding; and 3) consulting services for policy makers at all government levels, agricultural enterprises, farmer cooperatives, and family farms. The services cover a broad range of topics concerning of Guizhou agricultural economy and policy, rural poverty and community development, the development of modern agricultural science and demonstration parks, community-based natural resource management.
